Gastronomical Me

”It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it … and it is all one.”

–M.F.K. Fisher, The Gastronomical Me

I’m stuck in Fairbanks, Alaska.  And I mean stuck.  Plane tickets out of this place are expensive, which wouldn’t be a tragic situation except that I really love to travel.  More importantly I love to eat when I travel.  But when I can’t travel, I cook and read about food. I’m amassing a library of food fiction, essays, anthologies, and journalism and discovering that there are as many ways to approach the topic of food as there are ways to skin a cat. This blog has grown to be a way for me to keep track of what I’m reading and the contexts into which we fit our experiences with the edible world.

I write about other things and I paint and I have a day job, but The Tart Little Piggy is where I play with food. You can contact me by email at emason@alaska.edu or just Google me… the results are probably safe for work.
